The Indian Premier League (IPL) has set high standard of fielding. Like every year, the last edition of IPL in 2020 also witnessed some brilliant piece of fielding. There were some stunners on the fencing as well as there were some impeccable one-handed catches and also some high balls that needed stationary position to catch it which is not at all easy to pick up. 

We all know that catches win matches and in a bid to take the fielding to the highest level all the franchise teams have introduced specialist fielding coaches as well as ultra-modern equipment so that the players tend to perform better. 

As the 14th edition of IPL is set to begin on 9th April there is an opportunity to look back at some of the IPL 2021: Best catches in IPL history

Chris Lynn (KKR vs RCB, Sharjah, 2014)

Chris Lynn has got into the list of IPL 2021: Best catches in IPL history. In 2014 Sharjah in the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) the situation reached a tensed moment where RCB needed only nine runs to win the match as AB De Villiers and Albie Morkel was on the crease were on the crease. The first three deliveries earned three singles with ABD on strike on the fourth delivery and he needed six runs only to win the match. Vijay Kumar was the bowler and the South African great unleashed a big shot over the cow corner boundary but he mistimed the shot. The ball rose high up in the air as all the fielders were in the game. Lynn was standing inside the rope just by a few inches. He positioned himself perfectly but his front foot slipped. Still he did not lose balance and sight of the ball even while falling on the ground before taking the catch and finally fell on his back, a few centimeters away from the rope. KKR won the match thanks to a memorable catch taken by Lynn. 

AB de Villiers (RCB vs SRH, Bangalore, 2018)

AB de Villiers is also called one of the most prolific fielders along with his batting. It was 2018 IPL where RCB was playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad. RCB set a target of 219 for Hyderabad outfit. Sunrisers Hyderabad  also had a good start with Alex Hales in full form and replying to RCB bowling. 

In the 8th over of the chase, Hales smashed one delivery to the mid-wicket. De Villiers who had stationed himself right on the edge of the boundary pulled off a stunning catch. The Alex Hale hit was sailing over De Villiers for a sure six. But the South African great perfectly jumped and caught hold off the ball. It was an incredible catch which can easily be called one of the IPL 2021: Best catches in IPL history. De Villiers caught the ball while still being airborne with his right hand. Even after an eccentric jump De Villiers did not lose his shape and landed inside the fence.

Trent Boult (RCB vs DD, Bangalore, 2018)

In the match between RCB and Delhi Daredevils in 2018, Trent Boult took a historic catch that drew attention of the world cricket. Delhi was defending with a score of 175. With Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers steady on the crease, it seemed that these two batsmen will guide RCB to a sure victory. But Kohli's wicket during this time turned the match slightly in Delhi's favor. Kohli flicked Harshal Patel full-toss down the leg-side. The ball moved towards the fence at a rocket-speed. Boult who was standing on the mid-wicket boundary judged the movement of the ball and threw himself into the air, plucking the ball in the air and finally managed to keep himself within the fence. His chest was almost touching the fence but he maintained the balance. It took a couple of minutes for the spectators to calm down and shrug off the magical catch taken by Boult.

Kieron Pollard (MI vs CSK, Mumbai, 2019)

Kieron Pollard has captured several astounding catches in his career. But the one he took against Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede was one of his finest catches. The match was between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai was defending with the score of 170 and in reply Chennai struggled at 33 for the 2 wickets. Jason Behrendorff delivered a short-pitched ball and Suresh Raina smashed it with absolute power to the deep point boundary. Pollard was stationed inside the boundary by a few meters and was not right on the edge. Pollard, watching the pace and movement of Raina's stroke, did not move behind. He just timed his jump and picked up the ball in the air before cart-wheeling towards the fence and still kept himself within the fence. The catch won catch of the match award as well as best catch of the season.

David Hussey (KKR vs DD, Delhi, 2010)

Unlike his international career, David Hussey, the brother of Michael Hussey had splendid moments in the IPL. One of the them was a magnificent catch that dismissed Paul Collingwood in a crucial KKR-Delhi match at Feroze Shah Kotla. Collingwood unleashed a cracking six straight towards the boundary. Hussey placed him on the edge of long-on boundary. The Australian made a desperate attempt with both hands to pick up the ball in the air. The ball hit his hand and going over the fence. Hussey immediately got the back inside the fence and successfully managed it to hold the ball in his right hand superbly. It also won the best catch of the season.
