List of IPL winners of All Seasons

Indian Premier League has been such a popular and prestigious cricket league that no other Twenty20 League across the world can match it in terms of popularity and prestige. But it is not only popular and prestigious. IPL has been equally tough and rigorous. This League is the costliest among all other Leagues, being staged in other countries. 13 editions have taken place already, and right from the beginning, it has been a star-studded affair. The cricket fraternity has witnessed several great batsmen, entertaining this League and earned Orange Caps. The Orange Cap winners get a cash prize of Rs 1 million also as well as several great bowlers have also been seen in action in the League. 

Now, before the 14th edition of the IPL starts within the next few hours, we will look into the winners of the League that began in 2008.

IPL winner 2008: Rajasthan Royals

In 2008 the IPL was inaugurated and it was staged in South Africa. A lot of big names were involved in several teams but an underdog Rajasthan Royals lifted the trophy for the first time, making the cricket specialists surprised. They defeated Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets. Yusuf Pathan made a brilliant 56 off 39 deliveries to guide his team to the victory. Yusuf also scalped 3 wickets at the cost of 22 runs in overs to snatch the best player’s award. Rajasthan Royals, a young team, made of almost uncapped Indian cricketers performed brilliantly and produced great discipline and dedication under the leadership of Australian spin legend Shane Warne who was both captain and coach of the team.

IPL 2009 Winner: Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers who finished at the bottom of the League table in 2008, clinched the title against all odds in 2009 under the captaincy of Adam Gilchrist. In the final, Deccan innings ended in 143 for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. The runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lost in the race by only 6 runs and their innings ended in 137 for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Adam Gilchrist was awarded Player of the Tournament for having contributed 495 runs and 18 dismissals behind the stumps.

IPL 2010 Winner: Chennai Super Kings 

Chennai Super Kings clinched the title after two years of commencement of the League. Despite having reached finals for two years, the team finally could be able to win the maiden trophy in 2010, defeating Mumbai Indians by 22 runs. Suresh Raina hogged the limelight scoring a stormy 57 off 37 deliveries taking CSK's score to 168 for the loss of 5 wickets. Mumbai Indians under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar was able to score only 146 for the loss of 9 wickets. Master Blaster alone fought, scoring 48. 

IPL Winner 2011: Chennai Super Kings 

MS Dhoni took his team to a second successive victory when Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs in the 2011 IPL final. It was a high-scoring match as CSK scored 205 for the loss of 5 wickets. Murli Vijay a superb 52-ball 95. In RCB only managed 147 for the loss of 8 wickets in their chase.

IPL Winner 2012: Kolkata Knight Riders 

It was assumed that Chennai Super Kings would make the hat-trick, winning the third consecutive title in 2012. But Kolkata Night Riders, emulating all speculation snatched the title defeating CSK by 5 wickets in the final. CSK won the toss and batted first. They scored 190 for the loss of 3 wickets. Suresh Raina continued his brilliant form, scoring 73 off 38 deliveries. In reply, KKR scored 192 losing 5 wickets in 19.4 overs. Manvinder Bisla who was adjudged man of the match scored 89 off 48 balls and Jack Kallis also struck a splendid 69 off 49 deliveries to guide KKR to the victory. 

IPL Winner 2013 : Mumbai Indians

It was a repetition of the 2010 final and this time Rohit Sharma led the team after Ricky Ponting was relieved of captain's role from Mumbai Indians in the middle of the competition. Mumbai Indians scored 148 for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Kieron Pollard was the leading scorer with an unbeaten 60 off 32 balls. In reply, CSK lost 9 wickets to score 125 in 20 overs. Dhoni was the lone warrior with an unbeaten 63. Mumbai won the final by 23 runs.

IPL Winner 2014 : Kolkata Knight Riders

Gautam Gambhir led KKR to its second title, becoming the second most successful skipper in the competition's history after MS Dhoni. It was the general election year and that is why a part of the competition was shifted to UAE. KKR defeated the first-time finalist Kings XI Punjab by 1 run in an exciting final to clinch the title for the second time. KKR scored 200 for 7 in 19.3 overs. MK Pandey was the leading scorer with 94 off 50 balls. Kings XI Punjab finished at 199 for 4 in 20 overs.

IPL Winner 2015 Mumbai Indians

This was the third time CSK and Mumbai Indians faced in the final where Mumbai Indians won the match by 41 runs. Mumbai scored 202 for 5 in 20 overs while CSK innings ended in 161 for the loss of 8 wickets. 

IPL Winner 2016 : Sunrisers Hyderabad

David Warne-led Sunrisers Hyderabad won the title, trouncing Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling final. Kohli was in sublime form this year and scored 973 runs to become the most run-scorer till then in the season. Hyderabad scored 208 for the loss of 7 wickets Warner struck a solid 69 off 38 balls. Bangalore innings finished at 200, losing also 7 wickets in 20 overs. Kohli struck 54 off 35 balls and Chris Gayle also hit 76 off 38 balls. Still, Hyderabad won the match by 8 runs. 

IPL Winner 2017 : Mumbai Indians

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians recorded their third title, defeating newcomer Rising Pune Super Giants in a thrilling finish where Mumbai won the match by only 1 run. Mumbai scored 129 for 8 in 20 overs. Krunal Pandya was the top scorer with 47 off 38 deliveries. In reply, Pune's innings came to the end at 128 for the loss of 6 wickets with Steve Smith being the top scorer with 51. 

IPL Winner 2018 : Chennai Super Kings

Coming back to the IPL after a two-year suspension MS Dhoni-led CSK was at its best in the season and won their 3rd title when they trounced Hyderabad outfit by 8 wickets in the final. Hyderabad batted first and scored 178 for 6 in 20 overs. CSK in reply scored 181 for 2 as Shane Watson made a brilliant unbeaten 117. 

IPL Winner 2019: Mumbai Indians

It was the fourth time Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings faced each other in the IPL final. The match however was not at all disappointing as MI won the exciting final by 1 run and secured the fourth IPL title. Mumbai scored 149 for 8 in 20 overs. Kieron Pollard remained unbeaten 41 off 25 balls. Chennai innings however ended in 148 for 9 in 20 overs despite a superb 80 from Shane Watson. 

IPL Winner 2020 : Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians registered their record-breaking fifth IPL tile, winning over Delhi Capitals in the final. The 2020 IPL was shifted to in UAE due to the attack of the COVID-19 pandemic. Delhi outfit, batting first scored 156 for the loss of 7 wickets. Shreyas Iyer was the top scorer with an unbeaten 65 of 50 balls. Mumbai in reply finished their innings at 157 for 5 in 18.4 overs. Rohit Sharma anchored the innings with a decent 68 off 51 balls.
