The legendary batsman also was on the verge of completing the 100th international century against England but fell short by 9 runs.

Sunil Gavaskar is in the second position among the Top 5 Indian batsmen with the most runs against England in Tests. Gavaskar who was called ‘little master’ had scored 2483 runs in 38 Tests against England at an average of 38.20 between 1971 and 1986. The former Indian captain had struck 4 centuries and 16 half-centuries against England. Gavaskar was a member of the Indian squad that defeated England for the first time 1-0 in 1971.

Rahul Dravid

He has scored 1950 runs in only 21 Tests against England with a superb average of 60.93. 'Mr. Dependable' of Indian batting who struck 95 on his debut against England, has scored 7 centuries and 8 half-centuries against the ‘Three Lions’. Dravid was the only star in India’s miserable show in their 2011 tour. He scored 461 runs at an average of 76.83 including 3 centuries. His superb performance in that series guided him to get into India’s One-Day International team after a gap of two years.

Gundappa Viswanath 

Top 5 Indian batsmen with the most runs against England in Tests

Another legendary batsman from India Viswanath ranks in the fourth position on the list. He had scored 1880 runs in 30 Tests with an average of 37.60. Within 11 years between 1971 and 1982, the right-handed magician with the bat had scored 4 centuries and 12 fifties including his best score of a magnificent 222 against England. He also was one of the key members of the Indian team that achieved their first historic win against England in 1971 at their home. Viswanath scored 128 runs in that series.

Dilip Vengsarkar

The former Indian captain, Dilip Vengsarkar has scored 1589 runs in Tests against England and includes himself as the fifth batsman among the top 5 Indian batsmen to score against England. Vengsarkar had scored five centuries and six half-centuries against England in Test. The right-handed batsman has made a rare record that none other Indian batsman has been able to achieve. That is 3 centuries in 4 innings at the home of cricket at Lords. He has scored 508 runs at Lords, the maximum by an Indian batsman.
