When Is Ms. Dhoni Going To Retire?

He is probably the favorite player of every Cricket fan in India. We have said this 100 times before and we will say it again, MS Dhoni is not just a player to the people of India, He is the modern God of Cricket to them. MS Dhoni, who was a part of Category A last season, did not receive a BCCI central contract this time and according to some media reports, which gave air to hashtags like latest updates on Dhoni’s retirement, is Dhoni going to retire? Dhoni to retire soon, MS Dhoni latest updates on retirement and so on.

MS Dhoni not receiving a central contract from the sport's governing body in India, giving air to speculations that he could retire from all formats of the game. He previously held a Grade A contract, which is the highest tier available to the players. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2014, even though he continued representing India in shorter formats of the game.

Dhoni is one of the highest run-getters in One Day Internationals (ODIs) with more than 10,000 runs under his belt as a right-handed middle-order batsman and wicket-keeper and is considered one of the best finishers in limited-overs formats in the world.

His fans last got a glance at him in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, where India lost to New Zealand. Recently, Indian team coach Ravi Shastri has indicated that Dhoni’s chances of getting back into the Indian team depend a lot on his performance in the Indian Premier League 2020. If Dhoni does come back, we could see him donning International Jersey in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Dhoni has led India to victory in three major global ICC tournaments but stepped down as captain in 2017 which includes the World Twenty20 (2007), World Cup (2011), and Champions Trophy (2013)

Dhoni’s captaincy records speak for themselves:

He has most wins by an Indian captain in ODIs and T20Is,

He also holds most consecutive wins by an Indian captain in ODIs.

After taking over the ODI captaincy from Rahul Dravid in 2007, Dhoni-led team India to its first-ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Dhoni became the first captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies (World Cup, Champions Trophy, and the World Twenty20) in June 2013, after India defeated England in the final of the Champions Trophy in England,

Since he took up the Test captaincy in 2008, Dhoni led the team to series wins in New Zealand, West Indies, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2008, 2010, and 2013. Dhoni also led the Indian team to number one position for the first time in the ICC Test rankings in 2009.

Dhoni was named as the captain of the ICC World Test XI in 2009, 2010, and 2013. He was also selected a record 8 times in ICC World ODI XI teams, 5 times as the captain of the team.

In an interview with a popular news daily, Former Indian Captain Kapil Dev mentioned that Dhoni has served the country so well for so many years that “it will be our loss” when he retires. He went on to say “He is not playing matches, so I don’t know when he is going to come out and say that he has had enough. It will be our loss whenever he does”. (source: Hindustan Times)

National Duty

Even when he is out of the Indian team, he has been performing his duties for his country by serving in the army. The Indian Territorial Army bestowed the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel to MS Dhoni on 1 November 2011. He is the second Indian cricketer after Kapil Dev to be bestowed with this honor. He is also a qualified paratrooper following his five parachute training jumps. Dhoni has been conferred the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian award, by President Ramnath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The point is, that this man has done so much for the country that to even question his caliber at this point will be an injustice to a player of his stature. It is we stop all the speculations and assumptions and let the man decide for himself, the man has earned it, hasn’t he?
