Following the declaration, Australia seeks to win in Sydney

With the terrible weather causing the game to be postponed for more than two days finally conceded at noon, the Australian team swiftly declared that they would give their bowlers as much time as possible to eliminate the visitors twice.

Australia declared on 475-4 on Saturday in hopes of winning the third test and sweeping the series 3-0, but South Africa was only down to 149 for six at the end of the fourth day of play.

When the bad weather that had canceled the game for the majority of the first two days finally let up at noon, Australia promptly announced that they would give their bowlers as much time as possible to dismiss the visitors twice.

With the help of their captain Pat Cummins' (3/29) and Josh Hazlewood's (3/29) superb speed bowling, the hosts destroyed South Africa's resistance whenever a pair appeared to be forming (2/19).

In order to prevent the follow-on, which is South Africa's best opportunity to force a draw, Marco Jansen, who had made 10 runs without being out, and Simon Harmer, who is unbeaten on six, will resume play on Sunday.

Usman Khawaja, who was unfortunate enough to be left stranded after Cummins decided to declare, was 195 not out and five runs away from reaching his first test double-century.

Dean Elgar's poor performance continued as he gloved a short Hazlewood delivery behind for 15, adding 164 further runs to Khawaja's census than Elgar had in the series' former four innings combined.

After surviving the remainder of the early speed offensive, Sarel Erwee left a Nathan Lyon ball that nipped the side of his off stump and went back to the pavilion with his opening partner for 18.

Heinrich Klaasen was formerly more caught behind in the following over, giving Cummins his demoiselle gate, but the excursionists held on to reach the half- time break with a score of 71 for three.

Temba Bavuma's good stand with Khaya Zondo came to an end when he edged a Hazlewood ball behind and left for 35. When Zondo was caught lbw by a Yorker from Cummins, he'd made 39. This outgrowth was verified by DRS.

In a late-speed barrage, Kyle Verreyne, South Africa's strongest batsman during a disastrous series for the visitors, was out for 19 when Cummins induced a stab at the ball that Steve Smith snagged in the slips.

As Cummins and Hazlewood tried to gain more access to the South African fur business, Jansen and Harmer stood their ground as the 'cumshots' echoed around the Sydney Cricket Ground in the dim evening light.

Australia ended the streak with convincing victories in two places, the first one being Brisbane and second being Melbourne but needed to win their last game to secure a place in the final of this year's Test World Cup.
