Anrich Nortje overview

Anrich Nortje is a cricketer from South Africa. He is a right-arm fast bowler. He was born on 16th November 1993. The 27-year old fast bowler was born in a place that was north of Port Elizabeth. The city was already famous for having the largest factory of renowned Volkswagen cars in the Africa continent. Nortje studied at Brandwag High school and then acquired a degree in Bachelor of Commerce in financial planning at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The beginning of Nortje's cricket career was at this University where he became passionate about the game.

Nortje had a big appreciation from none other than legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn who after having watched Steyn’s bowling commented, “It was truly exciting to watch.” Nortje has the ability to deliver at a speed more than 150 kilometers per hour consistently and he also can embarrass batsmen with fearsome bouncers.

Early signs

Anrich Nortje made his debut in first-class cricket in 2013, participating in the Provincial Three-Day competition for Eastern Province against Namibia. Nortje however obtained one wicket only at the cost of 30 runs in the first innings and got two wickets in the second innings at the cost o 40 runs after bowling 36 overs including both the innings. He also was not impressive in his debut in List ‘A’ match in the same year against Orange Free State, managing only one wicket in 9 overs at the cost of 22 runs. However, he took a couple of years to prove his mettle, and finally going by the statistics, he has claimed 192 wickets in 55 first-class matches including his best figure of 9wickets for 98 in a match.

ODI Career

Anrich Nortje made his debut in a One-Day International match last year against Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Johannesburg. Nortje also failed to draw attention, managing only one wicket in 7 overs at the cost of 33 runs. The bowler however has bagged only 14 wickets from his 7 ODIs so far.

Test career

Anrich Nortje had begun his journey in Test cricket against India in the second Test at Pune in 2019. The series was a part of the ICC World Test Championship. Virat Kohli stole all the glare of publicity having scored a mammoth unbeaten 254, destroying South African bowling. Naturally, Nortje, being a debutant had no answer to Kohli’s magnificent 254 and he gave away 100 runs in 25 overs without a wicket. India won the match by an innings and 137 runs. Nortje however has played in 8 Tests so far and claimed 30 wickets at an economy rate of 3.83 including his best figure in a Test of 8 wickets for 120 runs. However, Nortje’s maiden five-wicket haul in Test came against England in 2020.

IPL career

Nortje also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for Delhi Capitals last year Nortje had claimed 22 wickets in 16 matches. He marked his establishment in the last IPL, executing a delivery at a speed of 156.22 kilometers per hour in the 30th match of the IPL last year.

T20 Career

Anrich Nortje flourished in the shortest format of the game. He made an achievable performance in a first-class franchise competition for Eastern Province with 20 wickets in four matches in 2016-17. Then representing Cape Town Blitz in his inaugural Mzansi T20 Premier League in 2017-18 Nortje's lightning speed helped him to earn 8 wickets in three matches. But his success did not last as he was ruled out of the tournament due to a severe ankle injury he had to undergo surgery. Having played Twenty20 matches in domestic cricket Nortje has claimed 50 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.88 while his best in the format has been 4 for 19. Nortje made his debut in the T20 International match against Mohali in 2019. Nortje was expensive with 27 runs in 3 overs without a wicket. He has claimed only 3 wickets in 5 T20Is so far.
