Murugan Ashwin overview

Murugan Ashwin is an Indian cricketer. He was born on 8th September 1990 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The 30-year-old cricketer is a right-hand leg-spinner and a right-hand batsman. Interestingly M. Ashwin had to face one significant question several times whether he was the brother of famous spinner R. Ashwin. Significantly M. Ashwin is one of the close friends of Ravichandran Ashwin. Both of them studied at the same college, played for Tamil Nadu's first division team, TNPL, and IPL teams. Interestingly, like R. Ashwin, Murugan also has two daughters.

Murugan however has revealed that he was highly inspired by R. Ashwin and obtained advice from India off-spinner several times over the years. Murugan was already going through a bright career, pursuing with GRE and lucrative job-offers in the USA. Still, he joined cricket out of passion and he also has stated that he does not have any regret.

Early signs

Murugan Ashwin had started his journey in first-class cricket in 2012, in a Ranji Trophy match against Orissa. Murugan did not get the scope of batting and bowling in the match which did not continue due to incessant rain and ultimately drawn. He has played in 4 first-class matches so far and managed 1 wicket only while with the willow he has scored 25 runs. Murugan Ashwin has also participated in 22 List ‘A’ matches and scalped 20 wickets including his best bowling figure of 3 for 18. He made his debut in the List ‘A’ game in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2015 against Mumbai and became the second-highest wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu with 10 wickets in that season.

Murugan’s journey in the Indian Premier League began in 2016 when he was purchased by Rising Pune Super Giants for Rs 4.5 crore which was 45 times the original base price of Rs 10 lakhs. He played in 10 matches that season and scalped 7 wickets. Then he was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 1 crore. From there Murugan switched over to Royal Challengers Bangalore and represented Punjab Kings in the last season. Murugan has claimed 25 wickets in total, playing in 31 matches in the IPL and he has been retained by Punjab Kings for the 2021 IPL also.

T20 Career

Murugan Ashwin made his debut in the domestic Twenty20 game in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Haryana in 2016 and in his maiden T20 appearance Murugan drew attention, scalping 3 wickets for 28 runs in 4 overs. He has taken part in 74 T20 matches and bagged 75 wickets at an economy rate of 7.31 including his best figure of 3 wickets for 8 runs and scored 102 runs in as many matches.
