Early signs
Gowtham’s professional career in cricket began when he was picked up for the under-15 zonal championship in Bangalore where he emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker. Gowtham made his debut in first-class cricket in 2012 in a Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh. Gowtham, being wicket-less in the first innings and scoring only 6 runs, managed 2 wickets in the second innings at the cost of 49 runs in 12 overs. However, Gowtham stole the limelight in the domestic cricket in Ranji Trophy in 2016 when he captured 18 wickets in his first three matches including two five-wicket hauls against Delhi and Assam. His inimitable performance helped Karnataka win both games. Gowtham, along with taking 166 wickets from 42 first-class matches at an economy rate of 2.77 including his best figure of 14 wickets for 1170 runs, has gathered 1045 runs including a century (149) in a similar number of matches. Gowtham made his debut in the List ‘A’ game in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Jharkhand in 2017. He managed only 13 runs with the willow but he had demonstrated his potential in his debut in a limited-over game also, claiming 4 wickets at the cost of 58 wickets in 10 overs. However, Gowtham has participated in 47 List ‘A’ matches and scored 558 runs while he has scalped 70 wickets including his figure of 5 for 28.
