Krishnappa Gowtham overview

Krishnappa Gowtham is an Indian cricketer who was born on 20th October 1988 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He is a right-hand batsman and a right-arm off-spinner.

The spinner was involved in controversy also when Gowtham all of a sudden took leave in the middle of Duleep Trophy in 2017 citing illness and was noticed within a few days later participating in Karnataka Premier League. The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) axed him immediately from the India 'A' squad that was going to make a trip to New Zealand as a part of the punishment.

Early signs

Gowtham’s professional career in cricket began when he was picked up for the under-15 zonal championship in Bangalore where he emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker. Gowtham made his debut in first-class cricket in 2012 in a Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh. Gowtham, being wicket-less in the first innings and scoring only 6 runs, managed 2 wickets in the second innings at the cost of 49 runs in 12 overs. However, Gowtham stole the limelight in the domestic cricket in Ranji Trophy in 2016 when he captured 18 wickets in his first three matches including two five-wicket hauls against Delhi and Assam. His inimitable performance helped Karnataka win both games. Gowtham, along with taking 166 wickets from 42 first-class matches at an economy rate of 2.77 including his best figure of 14 wickets for 1170 runs, has gathered 1045 runs including a century (149) in a similar number of matches. Gowtham made his debut in the List ‘A’ game in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Jharkhand in 2017. He managed only 13 runs with the willow but he had demonstrated his potential in his debut in a limited-over game also, claiming 4 wickets at the cost of 58 wickets in 10 overs. However, Gowtham has participated in 47 List ‘A’ matches and scored 558 runs while he has scalped 70 wickets including his figure of 5 for 28.

Krishnappa Gowtham began his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2018, being purchased by Mumbai Indians for Rs 2 crores in the mini-auction ahead of the League. Gowtham played in 15 matches and scalped 11 wickets and scored 126 runs in his maiden IPL season. But Gowtham got a big break in 2018 when he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for an astronomical price of Rs 6.2 crores. In the last IPL Gowtham played for Punjab Kings. He has played in 24 matches and scored 186 runs while has managed 13 wickets in as many matches so far. In the auction for the 2021 IPL, Krishnppa Gowtham has been the most expensive 'uncapped' player who was purchased by Chennai Super Kings at an astounding price of Rs 9.25 crore.

T20 Career

Gowtham made his debut in a domestic Twenty20 game in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Goa. Gowtham, however, failed to shine in the match but ultimately from his 62 T20 matches Gowtham has scored 594 runs including 2 half-centuries, and captured 41 wickets including his best bowling figure of 4 for 19.
