Early signs

Padikkal, despite being born in Kerala moved to Karnataka with his family in 2011. He started learning cricket there at the Karnataka Institute of Cricket. He began it in 2014 and then he represented Karnataka in the under-16 and the under-19 level. Devdutt Padikkal made his debut in first-class cricket for Karnataka in 2018 in a Ranji Trophy match against Maharashtra at Mysore. Even though Paddikal failed to score in the first innings (7 only), he showed his potential in the second innings in his maiden first-class appearance, scoring 77 off 128 deliveries. He batted for 200 minutes on the crease, hitting 11 fours. However, Padikkal has participated in 15 first-class matches and scored 907 runs at an average of 34.88 including his highest score of 99. Padikkal made his debut in the List ‘A’ cricket for Karnataka in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Jharkhand in 2019. Padikkal exhibited a decent 58 off 83 deliveries at a strike rate of 69.88. He became the leading run-scorer in his maiden appearance in Vijay Hazare Trophy with 609 runs in 11 matches. However, Padikkal has scored 1222 runs from his 18 List ‘A’ matches so far at the average of 87.28 including five centuries and seven fifties. His highest score in this format has been 152.

Devdutt Padikkal had begun his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2019 after being contracted by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at a base price of Rs 20 lakh. He had participated in 15 matches in his opening year and showed an excellent performance scoring 473 runs at an average of 34.53 and a striker rate of 124.80 including five fifties. He won the ‘Emerging Player Award’ of the 2020 IPL. Padikkal has also been retained by RCB for the 2021 IPL.

T20 Career

Devdutt Padikkal made his debut in Twenty20 cricket in the domestic circuit for Karnataka in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Uttarakhand in 2019. Padikkal remained 53 unbeaten to steer Karnataka to a 9-wicket convincing victory in the match. Padikkal has played in 33 matches so far and scored 1271 runs at a strike rate of 145.92 including his highest score of unbeaten 122.
