Shahbaz was included in the 'Vision 2020' project under the mentorship of VVS Laxman and the 26-year old all-rounder revealed later that Laxman told him he wanted Shahbaz to play for Bengal in a manner Rabindra Jadeja plays for the Indian team and it was a great honor for him. Bengal coach Arun Lal also had an appreciation for Shahbaz commenting that the cricketer is full of energy and has proved himself also as one of the most useful cricketers for Bengal in recent times.
