Angelo Mathews overview

Angelo Davis Mathews is a Sri Lankan cricketer who has captained the Sri Lankan side in all three formats. Mathews was born on 2nd June 1987 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Mathews first played in a List A game for Sri Lanka U-23 against New Zealand A in 2005. He played for the Sri Lanka U-19 team at the age of 16. He was named the captain of the team for the 2006 U-19 World Cup held in Sri Lanka. He made his First-Class debut for the Colts Cricket Club in November 2006.The 2007-08 season turned out to be a turning point in his career as he scored 696 runs at an average of 58. He was picked in the Sri Lanka A side by the then coach Chandika Hathurasingha. His scored an unbeaten 99 in the successful run-chase against South Africa which is rated as one of his best innings.

Mathews was a key member of the team that won the 2014 ICC world T20 and the team that reached the finals of the 2011 Cricket World cup, 2009 ICC World T20 and 2012 ICC World T20. Mathews also holds the record for the highest ninth wicket partnership along with his teammate Lasith Malinga. The best part about Mathews is that he is one of the most street-smart cricketers in the team, his ability to quickly adapt to situations and mold his game is just phenomenal.

Early signs

Angelo Mathews made his List A debut for his country Under-23s against New Zealand A at Police Park Ground, Colombo in September 2005. He has played 264 List-A matches so far and has scored 6,690 runs at an average of 37.17. He has 3 hundreds and 48 fifties to his name in List-A cricket. He led the Sri Lankan cricket team in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Mathews later made his first-class debut for Colombo Cricket Club in November 2006.

ODI Career

Mathews made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe on 28th November 2008 at the Harare sports club. He has played 217 matches till date and has amassed 5830 runs at an average of 41.94, hitting 3 hundreds and 40 fifties in his career. He has also taken 120 wickets at an economy rate of 4.63 and has a five-wicket haul and his best figure in a match is 6/20.

Test career

Mathews made his test debut against Pakistan at Galle International stadium on 4th July 2009. He has played 86 test matches so far and has scored 5981 runs at an average of 45.31 He has also scalped 33 wickets in the format at an economy rate of 2.7. He has 10 hundreds 1 double-hundred and 35 fifties under his belt and his best bowling figure in a match is 4/60. Mathews became Sri Lanka's youngest ever Test captain at 25 in February 2013. He captained the Sri Lankan team to one of the most memorable Test series win in England in 2014. His highest Test score of 200 came off 428 balls came in the first match vs Zimbabwe 2020.

IPL career

Angelo Mathews made his debut in IPL for the KKR - Kolkata in 2009 against CSK - Chennai on 25th April 2009. He has played 49 matches and has scored 724 runs at an average 23.35. He also has 27 wickets to his name, his best figure in a match stands at 4/19.

T20 Career

Mathews made his debut in his T20 cricket against Australia on 8th June 2009 at Trent bridge. He has scored 1119 runs in 75 matches and has a strike rate of 118.66. He also has 38 wickets with best figures of 3/16 and has 5 fifties to his name.

ICC Trophies

Angelo Mathews took over the reins of the Sri Lankan team at a point when senior players had just stepped down and the team was going through a tough phase. Since then, he has made a place for himself in the team as a batsman, as an all-rounder and an influential captain. He is one of the mainstays in the Sri Lankan team and has been instrumental in shaping up the Sri Lankan team.
