Rovman Powell overview

Rovman Powell was born on 23rd July 1993 at the Bannister district of Old Harbor in Jamaica. The 27-year cricketer is a right-hand middle-order batsman. He represents Jamaica and Combined Campuses and Colleges in domestic cricket and also for Jamaica Tallawahs in Caribbean Premier League. Rovman Powell has already represented West Indies seniors in the One-Day International (ODI) matches.

Rovman Powell who used to play age-group cricket in Jamaica had to cross steep hurdles of extreme poverty in his childhood. Along with his single mother and younger sister Powell had to face a lot of hardship while growing up. He has divulged how his mother had to work in three different places every day just to manage the school fees of her daughter and also a son. Powell has admitted that he has learned to accept challenges in life and fight them out after having watched the hardship his mother had faced. Powell is called 'Jr. Andre Russell'. The batsman has said that he does not feel pressure with the comparison.

Early signs

Powell had his maiden appearance in first-class cricket in 2015, playing for Jamaica against Guyana. In his debut, he scored only 13 runs from 40 deliveries. In the same year, Rovman Powell made his debut in the List 'A' cricket representing Combined Campuses and College against Guyana and earned the man-of-the-match award for taking 3 wickets for 20 runs and scoring 32 runs. In the very next year also, Rovman, continuing his form had struck 2 fifties in the final two matches in the Regional Super50 competition. In the last four of the competition, Powell was in devastating form with a smashing 95 runs from only 45 deliveries including 9 sixes and 6 fours before scalping 5 wickets for 36 runs with the ball. Once again man-of-the-match award steered him to have a contract with Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. Powell got a contract also from Cricket West Indies in 2018 and the next year he became the skipper of Jamaica for the Regional Super50 Championship where he finished as the leading scorer with 412 runs from eight matches.

ODI Career

Rovman Powell made his debut in One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka at Harare in 2016. He earned applause with 44 runs from 29 balls including 2 fours and 3 sixes. He has participated in 34 ODIs so far and scored 670 runs with a strike rate of 83.12 including one hundred and two fifties where his highest score has been 101. Powell played in his last ODI against Bangladesh at Sylhet in 2018. He was the captain of West Indies in that series. But he failed in the match, scoring only 1 run playing only 9 deliveries.

Rovman Powell participated in his first T20 International match against Pakistan at Bridgetown in 2017. Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets while Powell scored only 5 runs. Powell has taken part in 29 T20 International matches and amassed 337 runs with the striker rate of 121.66 where his highest score has been 54. He has played in 79 T20 matches so far and from his 68 innings, he has gathered 1225 runs with the highest score of 84.
