Early signs

Conway who was representing Gauteng in South Africa made his debut in first-class cricket in the Provincial Three-Day competition against Eastern in 2009. But he was not able to impress, failing to score playing in only six deliveries. Conway also failed to impress in his opening ‘List A’ match in the Provincial One-Day Challenge tournament in 2009, scoring only 6 runs playing in 19 deliveries. Having continued his struggle to establish himself as a cricketer, Conway's success, compared to his initial disaster, came after a gap of six years. Conway struck 53 runs in three matches of the Africa T20 Cup for Gauteng. Conway was registered by Wellington for 2018 in New Zealand during the second phase of the Plunket Shield season. Conway hogged the searchlight of the media and cricket fraternity in New Zealand by scoring a superb double-century against Otago at Basin Reserve. Then he did not have to look back. The batsman was the top scorer in the Super Smash tournament with 363 runs from nine matches. In the very next year, in the same Plunket Shield, Conway stunned the Kiwi cricket fraternity by scoring unbeaten 327 for Wellington against Canterbury. It was the ninth triple century in New Zealand cricket. This year also, in the Super Smash League, Conway stormed with his bat, scoring an unbeaten century only off 49 balls while he became the leading scorer in the competition with 543 runs in 11 matches. In the Ford Trophy this year, Devon Conway became the top-scorer with 553 runs in 10 matches, and also in the Plunket Trophy this year Conway made a towering 701 runs from only six matches to earn the highest scorer’s tag. Conway, for having struck huge runs in Kiwi domestic cricket had already received the accolade. He was named best player of the men’s domestic cricket in New Zealand at the annual New Zealand cricket award function in 2020. In first-class cricket Conway, participating in 107 matches has scored 7084 runs so far including 18 centuries and 32 fifties.
