Early signs

Will Young began his journey in first-class cricket in 2012 for Central Districts against Auckland at Napier in the Plunket Shield. He scored only 22 runs, playing 53 deliveries in the match that was won by Central Districts. He was chosen captain of the junior New Zealand side for the under-19 World Cup in the same year in 2012. But Young was not so impressive in the World Cup. Except for a century he failed to score runs in the competition. Young scored only 149 runs from his six World Cup matches including the only century (115) made against Scotland. Then settling as a batsman gradually in the Central District, Young was given the captain’s band of the team after three years in 2015. Young's age was only 23 at that time. Under his captaincy, Central Districts won the Ford Trophy in 2016 and also clinched the Plunket Shield title without losing a single match which happened in 2018. Will Young has participated in 80 first-class matches and amassed 5125 runs at an average of 43.43 including 10 centuries and 29 fifties. His highest score in first-class cricket has been 162. In the ‘List A’ game Young has gathered 1979 runs from his 57 matches so far with an average of 37.33 including five centuries and 11 fifties. His highest run so far in the ‘List A’ game has been 136.

ODI Career

Will Young has not participated in official One-Day International matches so far. But he was one of the regular members of New Zealand XI that toured Australia to take part in three unofficial One-Day matches against Australian XI. Will Young was in brilliant form in that one-day warm-up series even though he received a severe injury on his right shoulder during the training period in Australia. Having dominated the top-class Australian bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, the Kiwi batsman struck two back-to-back centuries, 130 and 111 along with a superb 60. His average was more than 100 in the series. He was chosen as one of the reserve players of the national squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2019. But his shoulder injury, which happened in May last year forced him completely out of the turf for the whole of 2019.

Test career

Will Young ensured a berth in the New Zealand Test squad in 2018 against Sri Lanka. But the 28-year-old batsman did not play in the series. He also earned a place in the New Zealand Test squad for the series against Bangladesh in March last year. But following the terror attack, the series was canceled. Rather he obtained the desired opportunity to step on the ground wearing a Test cap in December last year against West Indies in the first Test at Hamilton. But his long wait went in vain as the batsman, facing only 11 deliveries, was bowled out by Caribbean fast bowler Shannon Gabriel for only 5 runs. Young has played in two Tests only and scored 48 runs. His best score so far in the Test has been 43 against West Indies in the same series last year at Wellington. He scored the run after facing 87 deliveries.
