Early signs

Adil Rashid was potential from an early age. Terry Jenner, one of the coaches of the England Cricket Board spotted him when Rashid was 14 years old. Jenner was appointed by ECB to conduct camps for the encouragement of promising wrist spinners. At the age of only 17 years, Rashid impressed his coaches by capturing 6 wickets for 13 runs for Yorkshire Youth Academy in a competitive match in 2005. He struck 111 within a couple of days for Yorkshire Second Eleven in the under-17 county championship. In the very year, Rashid, having participated in many matches for Yorkshire Second Eleven, scored four successive centuries. Adil Rashid made his debut in first-class in 2006 against Warwickshire in a match replacing injured overseas Australian all-rounder Darren Lehman. In the second innings, Rashid stripped off Warwickshire's middle-order and helped Yorkshire to win the match. Rashid took 6 wickets for 67 runs. His splendid show guided him to ensure a berth in under-19 England against India under-19 side. He failed to sh8ine in the first Test but in the second Test, Adil Rashid had an impressive show with 114 and 48 runs in both innings and claimed 10 wickets in the match. Considering Rashid's performance in first-class cricket, 2007 was a memorable year for him. Across all first-class matches in the season Rashid had scored 837 runs with a batting average of 44.05 and claimed 43 wickets. Rashid received applauses from the English cricket fraternity as well as his teammates in Yorkshire were also impressed by his performance. Renowned Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie had stated that Adil Rashid would be seen in international cricket very soon due to his potential and in 2007 Rashid was awarded 'Young Cricketer of the Year' by the English journalists. But in the second innings, Rashid made a remarkable come-back, scalping 5 wickets for only 64 runs in 18.5 overs although in the next two Tests of the series Rashid did not look extra-ordinary as he was able to claim only three wickets.
