Early signs
Reece Topley, a product of the Essex youth development program, made his debut in first-class cricket for Essex in 2011 and in his debut season in County Championship Topley made his headlines. The lanky 17-year old left-arm medium-pacer rocked the English County that year, bagging 14 wickets for Essex in three opening championship matches including five-wicket hauls in each of his first two games against Kent and Middlesex. Even in the under-19 World Cup in Australia in 2012 Topley graced his status, being the highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets. Topley made his debut in English county for Essex in 2011 against Cambridge MCCU. Topley drew attention against Kent, scalping 5 wickets for 46 in the second innings. But, despite having been consistent in first-class cricket, Topley was often being embarrassed by a stress fracture and he often had to be ruled out of mainstream cricket. In 2018 Topley had to undergo back surgery. The fast bowler, having played in 36 first-class matches has claimed 133 wickets including his best figure of 6 wickets for 29 runs. In the List ‘A’ cricket Topley has participated in 56 matches and claimed 94 wickets so far.
ODI Career
Topley who has not yet made his debut in Test began his journey in the One Day International cricket against Australia in 2015 in the fifth ODI at Manchester. He was expensive as well as wicket-less, giving away 33 runs in 5.2 overs. However, Topley has participated in 11 ODIs and claimed 17 wickets where his best figure has been 4 wickets for 30 runs.
