Early signs
Leach was taken to Somerset cricket ground by his father when he was a few years old. He expressed willingness to become a fast bowler but due to his father’s unwillingness Leach developed himself as a spinner through Somerset’s youth development system. Leach played in all age-group levels like under-13, under-15, and under-17 teams. Even he earned distinction in the under-15 level. His 6 wickets for 21 in the Minor County match against Lincolnshire and consistent show in the season in 2010 played an instrumental role in Dorset's victory. Then he represented Cardiff MCCU in 2011 and the next year in 2012 Leach made his first-class debut for MCCU against Somerset. The spinner delivered 41 wicket-less overs as Somerset amassed a mammoth 642 runs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Later that season, Leach had played his first match for Somerset's first team in a two-day match against South Africa and took the wicket of Hashim Amla. Leach subsequently had played his first match in the County Championship in Liverpool in 2012 against Lancashire and showed better performance scalping 3 wickets for 37 runs in 18 overs in the second innings. But the spinner did not have much opportunity due to the signing of Pakistani spinner Abdur Rehman and Somerset's first-choice left-arm spinner George Dockrell. However, Leach became a star surprisingly in the County Championship unexpectedly in 2016. His left-arm spin turned out such penetrative that Somerset reached the top of the table on the last day of the Championship. Leach scalped 65 wickets at 21 apiece. His high-arm bowling action and excellent variety in flights put the batsmen in real trouble. Leach has claimed 303 wickets in 92 first-class matches so far at an economy rate of 2.70 including his best figure of 12 wickets for 102 runs in a match. He also has scored 1143 runs in as many matches including his top score of 92. In the List ‘A’ game Leach has also captured 21 wickets in 16 matches and scored 22 runs.
