Cricket Terms You Should Know

Cricket has been around for about 200 hundred years now, as the game evolved with time cricket terminology took birth and players started using them to explain what they were trying to imply in the game. Then it became essential to know cricket terminology. The exact time and date of the discovery are not known because every new term was invented after a new occurrence during a game, general terms of the game remained static. 

The terminology of the game gives it the uniqueness and the rich legacy it has been a part of. Today the popular cricket terms are well known across the globe and all cricket playing nations use the same terminology. The terminology of Cricket is so widespread that it is also known by people living in non-test playing nations. It is amusing to see how cricket phrases have become household names for us.  We may use them on a regular basis whenever we can find time to play a quick game of cricket, but do we actually know that we use the right terms? What do these terms actually mean? What is its significance? When does a player actually use them? Answers to all these questions lie within the meaning of these terms. Let us look into a few cricket terms and conditions and see what they actually mean:


1. Innings 

Innings are used to signify a player’s or a team’s turn to bat or bowl. The term is usually used to signify one inning but is used as “innings” in both singular and Plural.

2. HOW IS THAT?

“How is that?” is generally what a bowler or his fellow teammates shout in order to appeal to the umpire. It is basically a question to the Umpire if the batsman is out or not.

3. Googly

Googly refers to a type of delivery in Cricket in which the spinning of the ball causes it to drift sharply to the leg side of a right-handed batsman. This delivery is also known as the “Wrong un”.

4. Doosra

Doosra is a related off-spin equivalent of the Googly that turns the wrong way in order to deceive the batsman. Known as the “other one” or “another one” in both Hindi and Urdu, this technique was first created by Pakistan Bowler Saqlain Mushtaq.

5. Jaffa 

Often used after delivery, Jaffa basically is a slang that refers to an exceptionally well-bowled delivery which is so good that it is practically unplayable by a batsman. Jaffa is also known as ‘Corker’.

6. Duck 

Duck basically refers to a batsman’s score of naught (0) dismissed, which means he was out without opening his account. This term was originally called a “duck’s egg” because of the shape of “0” on the scoreboard.

7. DRS

DRS is basically a common abbreviation for the “Decision Review System”.

8. Carrom Ball

This is a method of bowling where the bowler releases the ball by flicking it between the thumb and the middle finger in order to get the ball to spin.

9. Backfoot shot

This is the style of batting where a shot is played with the batsman’s weight on their back foot which is closest to the stumps. This shot is usually attempted by the batsman to aim behind the square of the wicket.

10. Dot Ball 

Dot ball refers to a delivery which was bowled without any runs scored off it, it is so-called because it is recorded with a single dot in the scorebook.
