The Indian premier league is unlike any other cricket league in the world. It is the toughest, biggest, costliest affair in the world of cricket. Hundreds of players give in their names to play in this league in pursuit of the huge money and fame that comes with it. Millions of people watch it on the TV screens and its mostly a full house at every stadium in the country. 

12 editions have taken place so far and it has always been a star-studded affair. Many great batsmen have made their appearances during these 12 editions and have grabbed the best prize in batting that the league has to offer– To become the Orange cap holder. The winner of this prize gets a replica of the original Orange Cap and a cash prize of INR 1 million. 

The aim is clear, you score runs and end up at the top of the table, you win the Orange cap. IPL is a high-intensity cricket league, the best players in the world are all playing in the same league. We also get to see a lot of exciting new talent coming up. When it comes to batting, there are a lot of batsmen in line for the Orange cap. So today, we are going to talk about the ones who actually got the honor. 


1. Shaun Marsh (2008)

Team: KXIP - Punjab

 Runs: 616 

Average: 66.84

The inaugural season of the IPL was a glamourous start to the legacy and would be edged in the memory of Shaun Marsh. The left-handed Australian batsman made a point after smashing a century and five half-centuries to spice up the league. Marsh’s strike rate in that edition stands at 139.68 and became the pioneer to start the legacy of the orange cap holders list.

2. Matthew Hayden (2009)

Team: CSK - Chennai

Runs: 572 runs

Average: 52.00


Due to the National elections in the country, the IPL moved to South Africa. This was not the best year for any of the Indian batsmen as only three batsmen could finish in the top ten run-scorers with only Suresh Raina in the top eight. The Aussie great Mathew Hayden dominated the conditions in South Africa exceptionally. He had five fifties under his belt, whilst smashing 572 runs, becoming the second consecutive Australian to wear the orange cap.

3. Sachin Tendulkar (2010)

Team: MI - Mumbai

Runs: 618 

Average: 47.53

If anyone were supposed to become the first Indian Orange cap holder, there could no one better than Sachin Tendulkar who went on to become the first Indian to wear the orange cap after the IPL 2010 came to an end. This is the same year; the little master also became the first cricketer to score a double hundred in ODIs. Unfortunately, his team could not win the title and lost to CSK - Chennai in the finals.

4. Chris Gayle (2011)

Team: RCB - Bangalore

Runs: 608 

Average: 67.55

Chris Gayle joined RCB - Bangalore for the 2011 edition after getting Called in as a replacement for Dutch bowler Dirk Nannes. He had already spent three years with the KKR - Kolkata. The Jamaican powerhouse smashed 608 runs from 12 matches including 2 hundred and 3 fifties.

5. Chris Gayle (2012)

Team: RCB - Bangalore

Runs: 733 

Average: 61.08

Gayle’s Heroics had already earned him a full contract with RCB at the start of the fourth edition and Gayle proved he was worth every penny by winning the Orange cap for the second time. Gayle scored a little more than 700 to go past his own previous record. The Jamaican smashed one hundred and seven fifties in the season.

6. Michael Hussey (2013)

Team: CSK - Chennai

Runs: 733

Average: 52.35


Michael Hussey surpassed the ‘Universe Boss’ by 25 runs to claim the orange cap and stopped Chris Gayle from completing a hat-trick at the end of the 2013 edition. Popularly known as Mr. Cricket, Hussey smashed six fifties in the season.

7. Robin Uthappa (2014)

Team: KKR - Kolkata

Runs: 660 

Average: 44.00


It was Robin Uthappa’s time to shine in the seventh edition as he topped the run charts in 2014 including consecutive eight 40+ scores and five fifties. Uthappa went on to become only the second Indian to win the Orange cap. He alongside his skipper Gautam Gambhir formed a strong partnership that helped KKR - Kolkata to their second IPL title.

8. David Warner (2015)

Team: SRH - Hyderabad

Runs: 562

Average: 43.23

David Warner set the momentum of this edition with his seven half-centuries as he went on to smash 562 runs in the season. Becoming the 3rd Australian and left-hander to finish as the top run-getter.

9. Virat Kohli (2016)

Team: RCB - Bangalore

Runs: 973 

Average: 81.08

Virat Kohli joined the party in the 2016 edition. The RCB captain went on to break many batting records. His aggressive batting helped him finish with 973 runs from 16 games at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 152.03 which includes four hundred – the most in a season – and seven fifties.

10. David Warner (2017)

Team: SRH - Hyderabad

Runs: 646 

Average: 58.27

The Australian southpaw smashed 646 runs in the 2017 edition and won his second orange cap in the space of three years.

11. Kane Williamson (2018)

Team: SRH - Hyderabad

Runs:735

Average: 52.50

The New Zealand skipper was in his best form, smashing 735 runs at an average of 52.50, hitting eight fifties in the tournament. He helped his team reach a second consecutive final before they were beaten by CSK - Chennai.
