Injury to Bumrah tempers veterans' ODI comeback against Sri Lanka

His comeback to competition has been further delayed as a result of Jasprit Bumrah's lower back injury, which is still not fully healed.

On the evening of the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Indian players as well as fans had mixed emotions. While Jasprit Bumrah, we can say the spearhead, will once again be missed now due to his injury, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are returning to the team.

Bumrah hasn't played the Asia Cup as well as the T20 World Cup as he’s been suffering from the pain of fracture in his  lower back. Else, everyone hoped India would show a competitive bowling attack in the three-match series starting here on Tuesday.

Because he hasn't entirely recovered from the injury, his recovery has been slowed down even more.

The speed spearhead's status is questionable at the moment for both the white-ball home series in the opposition to New Zealand, which starts on 18th Jan. The four-match Border-Gavaskar series begins on February 9.

India will be hosting the ODI World Cup of this year in Oct. and Nov. The mystery surrounding Bumrah's recovery and rehabilitation process is therefore growing as a result of his last-minute absence.

But as they attempt to win the series after upsetting Sri Lanka in the T20Is, the hosts will profit significantly from the arrival of the mainstays Rohit, Kohli, Rahul, and Iyer.

Except for the Asia Cup, India had a full 10-month ODI calendar, consisting of 15 matches, before the World Cup in October to November. The difficulty will be in juggling the task with the keenly anticipated Australia Test series and the Indian Premier League.

The challenge will be finding the ideal balance between these conflicting needs. However, the administration of the team is now concerned about a second Bumrah injury.

The reality is that there are many competitors, which is a very problem when selecting the top and finest five hitters. If Rohit, the team's opener, and Kohli, the No. 3, are performing well, it will be challenging to drop Ishan and Iyer.

Kishan played a magnificent innings in his most recent ODI against Bangladesh, reaching 210 runs, a career-high. Possibly after Rohit opens, the young player and Shubman Gill will face off.

Even though he was not present for the series against Bangladesh in December of last year, Gill has established himself as a quality ODI performer.

Iyer had a tremendous ODI season in 2017, batting at an average of 55.69 and accumulating 724 runs in 15 innings. His capacity to rotate the strike and handle spin in middle overs, a crucial skill on sub-continental surfaces, made him the cornerstone of India's batting.

The administration is now looking into Suryakumar's utility in the 50-over format. Surya became the first player in-game history to score three T20I tons without opening the batting. This was due to the fact that it was his 3rd hundred in the format in 7 months. He hasn't exactly had a successful ODI career, though.
