Samson’s brave century went in vain as Punjab wins its opener

Rajasthan Royals needed 5 runs to win in the last ball. But they could not. The gallant fight of seasoned campaigner Sanju Samson stopped at the hands of Deepak Hooda off Arshdeep Singh’s all-important delivery. Punjab Kings gained full three points, winning in an exciting thriller against Rajasthan outfit in the 4th IPL match in Mumbai on Monday.

Earlier, Punjab Kings losing the toss was asked to bat. It was K. L. Rahul who regained his touch and Chris Gayle’s aggression as well as Deepak Hooda’s blitzkrieg guided Punjab Kings to set a difficult target of 222 for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL match on Monday in Mumbai. 

However, the Punjab Kings Vs Rajasthan Royals match witnessed Rahul’s rapid-fire on the crease on the day. Rahul scored 91 off 50 balls hitting 7 fours and 5 huge sixes. Even after Punjab lost their first wicket of Mayank Agarwal in the 3rd over, Rahul and Gayle carried the innings forward with usual dominance as Gayle was out for 40 off 28 deliveries. Then it was Deepak Hooda whose magnificent 64 off only 28 balls gave Punjab a big relief as the team scored 221 for the loss of 6 wickets. 

Punjab Kings Vs Rajasthan Royals match also witnessed a debutant in the IPL Chetan Sakariya, drawing the attention of the cricket fraternity with an excellent piece of bowling against Punjab Kings. The left-arm medium-fast bowler, although was expensive with a 7.75 economy rate, scalped 3 wickets at the cost of 31 runs in 4 overs. Chris Morris, the most expensive cricketer of the IPL this edition, bagged 2 wickets giving away 41 runs in 4 overs. 

Punjab Kings Vs Rajasthan Royals match comprised of Samson's brilliant 119 off 63 balls with 12 fours and 7 sixes. But he did not get able support from his mates. Ben Stokes and ManaVohra failed to score. Jos Buttler (25 off 13 balls) and Shivam Dube (23 off 15 deliveries) tried to offer support to Samson but that was not enough to overtake Punjab King's score. Rajasthan innings ended 217 for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh was most successful among the Punjab bowlers. He captured 3 wickets for 35 runs in 4 overs while Mohammad Shami bagged 2 for 33 in 4 overs.
