The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to extend the Indian Premier League (IPL) with two more franchise teams in the next years. In its aftermath, the auction for the IPL is expected to be a mega event. The IPL commission has not yet made any announcement that how many players a franchise will be able to retain from its existing team but the cricket analysts, as well as the specialists, have started calculating the players, the franchises might retain in the next year.

Former Indian cricketer and analyst Akash Chopra has commented that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has no doubt that it will retain M.S. Dhoni out of the three existing players but he did not seem satisfied as his opinion is that MS Dhoni might himself ask why CSK are retaining him because he may not stay for three years and Dhoni might also ask the authorities that why he will be retained. Akash feels that Dhoni has no surety that he will be continuing for the next three seasons in the IPL and additionally if the team's skipper is retained then the team will have to pay him Rs 15 crores which according to former Indian cricketer does look worthy.
As MS Dhoni might himself ask why CSK are retaining him because he may not stay for three years former Indian cricketer and commentator Chopra also opined that if the rule of retaining three players from the existing squad is not implied then it will be easy for CSK to construct a completely new squad. According to Chopra, CSK should be happy to start from scratch, building up a new squad than blocking Rs 15 to 17 crores for one player. Time will say ultimately but firstly, MS Dhoni might himself ask why CSK is retaining him because he may not stay for three years.
