IPL as we all know is the grand fiesta of Indian Cricket. This league is not just another domestic league, in fact, it is the best there is. People around the globe just love watching the IPL because they get to see all the best players in the world playing in the same league. 

The IPL is also the most-attended cricket league in the world and in 2014 ranked sixth by average attendance among all sports leagues. The brand value of the IPL in 2019 was estimated at around ₹475 billion according to Duff & Phelps So, you can imagine the pressure on the player of playing for the teams which participate in the toughest cricket league in the world. Twelve seasons of the tournament have been hosted so far and the current IPL title holders are the MI - Mumbai, who won the 2019 season. The IPL 2020 season has been indefinitely suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Many great bowlers around the world have made their presence felt by giving some memorable performances all these years. A lot of new talent has also come up due to the IPL team formation criteria. They have all fought for the most talked-about prize amongst the bowlers  The Purple Cap. The math is simple, you bowl your heart out, take enough wickets to end up at the top of the table, you win the Cap and a cash prize of INR 1 million. 

Today we are going to make a list of all the purple cap holders till date:

1. Sohail Tanvir (2008)

Team: RR - Rajasthan

The inaugural season was the only season that saw the inclusion of cricketers from Pakistan. Sohail Tanvir, without a doubt, was the most explosive bowler in the RR - Rajasthan Dugout. Tanvir, with a tally of 22 wickets scripted a glorious season for himself the Royals. He finished with the best figures of IPL till date – 6/14 and maintained a decent economy rate of 6.46.

2. RP Singh (2009)

Team: Deccan Chargers

RP Singh had a lot of pressure playing for a team that managed to win just 2 matches 14 matches in the previous season. In his very first match of the second season, he returned with figures of 4/22 against KKR - Kolkata. He finished with 32 wickets at an economy rate of 6.98 and became one of the most important contributors in the team’s title win.

3. Pragyan Ojha (2010)

Team: Deccan Chargers

Ojha picked up 21 wickets in this season and picked up 3/26 against MI - Mumbai in a losing cause which went on to become his best bowling figure in this edition. He had previously finished with 18 wickets in the last season and was in a phenomenal form.

4. Lasith Malinga (2011)

Team: MI - Mumbai

With 28 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 5.95, Malinga was undoubtedly the most destructive bowler in this edition. In his first game of this edition, Malinga pierced through the batting order and finished with his best figures of 5/13.

5. Morne Morkel (2012)

Team: Delhi Daredevils

Morne Morkel was instrumental in helping the Delhi Daredevils reach the semi-final of this edition.  His best figures of 4/20 came in Delhi’s final group stage match against KXIP - Punjab.

6. Dwyane Bravo (2013)

Team: CSK - Chennai

Dwayne Bravo took 32 wickets and became the first bowler to pick more than 30 wickets in a single season. He had a high economy rate of 7.95 but was one of the most instrumental players in the CSK side.

7. Mohit Sharma (2014)

 Team: CSK - Chennai

Another Indian bowler who broke all the shekels to come out on the top of the table is Mohit Sharma. He also became one of the new talents to showcase his bowling skills in the biggest T20 league. Although he had taken 20 wickets in the previous season, he got overshadowed by bigger performances. However, this year he finished on top with 23 wickets at an economy rate of 8.39 which is still the highest for a purple cap holder

8. Dwayne Bravo (2015)

Team: CSK - Chennai

Dwayne Bravo became the first player in IPL history to win the purple cap twice by picking up 26 wickets in the eighth edition.

9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016)

Team: SRH - Hyderabad

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, now one of India’s best fast bowlers was the purple cap holder in the ninth edition with 23 wickets at an economy rate of 7.42. His best performance in this edition was 4/29 against Gujrat Lions.

10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017)

 Team: SRH - Hyderabad

Yes! Bhuvi did it twice in two years. He became the first bowler to retain his purple cap in IPL history. This time he took 26 wickets at an economy 7.09 and proved his mettle yet again.

11. Andrew Tye (2018)

Team: KXIP - Punjab

Andrew Tye finished the season as the Purple Cap winner in the 2018 edition picking up 24 wickets at an economy rate of 6.73.

12. Imran Tahir (2019)

Team: CSK - Chennai

The South- African was tremendous in the last season and was an integral part of the winning team. He took 26 wickets from 17 matches and helped his team win the title.
